The Ourika Valley, Imlil at the foot of Toubkal, Lalla Takerkoust lake: three day-trip ideas to discover the mountains overlooking Marrakech.
On a clear day, the High Atlas range stands out on the Marrakech horizon. A few dozen kilometres are enough to change worlds: earthen villages, green valleys and cooler air.
The Ourika Valley
The easiest escape from Marrakech, about an hour’s drive away. The valley follows the river between Berber villages and cultivated terraces. At the end, the village of Setti Fatma is known for its waterfalls, reached by a hike of varying length depending on your fitness.
Imlil, at the foot of Toubkal
About an hour and a half by road, Imlil is the starting point for hikes towards Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. No need to aim for the summit: the walks around the village, between walnut trees and earthen houses, already offer spectacular views.
Lalla Takerkoust lake
Even closer, this reservoir at the foot of the Atlas is ideal for half a day: lunch facing the water, a stroll, and mountain views when the sky is clear.
Our tips
- Leave early to enjoy the cool and avoid the crowds.
- Bring good shoes and a warm layer: it is cooler at altitude.
- A local guide makes the visit richer, and safer on hikes.
